Simple but Elegant: A Leisure Complex Center by Chunli Zhang

Creating Reverie Spaces with Chinese Traditional Design

The project, located in Weihai City, Shandong Province, is a low-density leisure center within a high-density industrial park. It aims to provide humanistic and spiritual care for employees, offering a place for relaxation and rejuvenation after work. The design prioritizes the physical and mental health of individuals, reducing the negative effects of mechanized work.

The leisure complex center features a vestibule building connected through various corridors. The top of the corridors is adorned with mirror steel plates, reflecting the surrounding landscape and seamlessly integrating with the environment. The undulating footpath in the backyard landscape connects with viewers, providing a moving and comfortable experience.

One of the unique aspects of this design is the incorporation of the traditional Chinese garden pattern of vestibule and backyard. This layout creates a visual sense of landscape, allowing visitors to experience the space step by step. The leisure park with a lake in the southeast separates the experience space from the nearby park and traffic flow, enhancing the tranquility and serenity of the center.

The project covers a total area of 39,478 square meters, with the building occupying 4,522 square meters. The design team, consisting of Chunli Zhang, Wei Sun, Zhen Ye, and Yantong Zhou, successfully overcame several challenges during the design process. These challenges included site construction according to local conditions and the construction of gardens in the cold climate of northern China.

Chunli Zhang's "Simple but Elegant" leisure complex center has been recognized for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category in 2021. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that exhibit creativity, resourcefulness, and technical excellence, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
